What is IEMA Pathways to Net Zero

November 2024

Pathways to Net Zero is an IEMA course that covers essential topics around the transition to net-zero carbon emissions for businesses

Net zero has become a defining concept for those helping to prevent climate change. There has been no greater push for this than in the world of business. Simply put, organisations must chart their path towards achieving net zero and that process includes proper education through the IEMA Pathways to Net Zero course. Failures to do so could result in fines and legal action as environmental legislation becomes increasingly stringent.

What is Net Zero?

In a business sense, Net Zero refers to a business's commitment to reducing carbon emissions to as close to zero as possible. More broadly, the term means balancing the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) released into the atmosphere with the amount removed.

The way net zero is achieved by an organisation, government, or individual is by offsetting or removing an equivalent amount of GHGs as what they produce. This balance is crucial in limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, a target set by the Paris Agreement to mitigate the most severe impacts of climate change.

Net Zero isn’t solely about reducing emissions; it also involves strategies for carbon capture, storage, and investment in renewable resources. Achieving Net Zero is challenging but essential, demanding innovation and a transformation in energy systems, industry practices, and consumer habits. Failure to adapt could lead to public scrutiny and legal action.

How Do You Transition to Net Zero?

Transitioning to Net Zero involves a multi-step approach, often requiring significant shifts in:

  • Policy
  • Operations
  • Mindsets

In order to fully transition to net zero, organisations will need to take several steps to be as thorough and practical as possible.

  • Assessing the Current Impact: The first step is to conduct a baseline carbon emissions assessment to collect carbon emissions data.
  • Setting Clear Targets: Organisations should set realistic but ambitious targets for reducing emissions. Many opt to adopt science-based targets that align with global climate goals. For instance, some companies might aim to reduce emissions by 50% over a specific timeline to achieve their Net Zero goal.
  • Implementing Emission-Reducing Strategies: This stage is the time for action. Organisations can introduce a wealth of initiatives, such as:
    • Adopting renewable energies.
    • Improving energy efficiency.
    • Altering production processes.
  • Offsetting Residual Emissions: Not all emissions can be eliminated. To achieve Net Zero, the remaining emissions must be offset through carbon credits, investing in reforestation, or funding carbon capture projects.
  • Monitoring and Reporting Progress: Regular monitoring and transparent reporting ensure accountability. It helps organisations stay on track and reassess strategies to optimise progress.

All of these methods are covered in the IEMA Pathways to Net Course, and you can find out more about them from Enock Ebbah, our resident environmental expert at Astutis.

What is Pathways to Net Zero?

Pathways to Net Zero is a training course designed by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). Our training course is designed to equip professionals and organisations with the practical knowledge, skills, and practical tools required to navigate the complexities of achieving Net Zero emissions.

It covers various topics, including carbon measurement, target setting, emission reduction methods, and reporting requirements. More and more businesses are recognising their role in combating climate change, which has made the IEMA Pathways to Net Zero a must-have for any organisation looking to keep up with its competitors.

Pathways to Net Zero Benefits for Businesses

Implementing IEMA’s Pathways to Net Zero brings a multitude of benefits for businesses aiming to become more sustainable:

1. Enhanced Reputation and Brand Value: Consumers and stakeholders are increasingly drawn to environmentally responsible companies. Committing to a credible Net Zero strategy enhances a company’s reputation and brand loyalty.

2. Regulatory Compliance: With tightening regulations on carbon emissions, the Pathways to Net Zero program helps companies stay ahead of evolving compliance requirements, avoiding potential fines and reputational damage.

3. Cost Savings and Efficiency: By reducing energy use, companies can lower operational costs. For instance, improving energy efficiency and investing in renewable resources can lead to long-term financial savings.

4. Attracting Investment: Investors are increasingly focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics. Following a structured Net Zero plan can attract sustainability-focused investors, boosting access to capital.

5. Future-Proofing the Business: Transitioning to Net Zero helps businesses stay resilient against future environmental and economic challenges. Being proactive now can shield companies from potential costs related to stricter future regulations or rising energy prices.

This covers only a fraction of the benefits the IEMA Pathways to Net Zero can offer.
